What Makes Bourns Different?

Many things set BCOE apart from its peer institutions. Here are some examples of how we engineer excellence:

  • Strong national rankings and recognition from U.S. News & World Report,  Princeton Review and the National Research Council.
  • Curricula with technical depth and diversity.
  • A world-class research faculty with a commitment to teaching.
  • Small class sizes, creating a personalized learning environment.
  • Academic excellent as part of the world’s premier research institution, the University of California.
  • Opportunities to develop your leadership skills.
  • Preparation for the next step, be it an advanced degree or a great job.

A Hands-On Education

Bourns College of Engineering will prepare you for the real world, giving you the skills to be a leader through hands-on practical training.

These opportunities allow you to try out new career paths, gain valuable skills and workplace experience and give you a competitive edge when searching for a job.

Extensive Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Bourns undergraduates have the opportunity to participate in hands-on research with our faculty. Few other top-tier research institutions can match our commitment to student research opportunities. Bourns has more than $30 million in sponsored research each year and as an undergraduate you will have real opportunities to participate in and contribute to the innovative work done in these laboratories.

Organization-Based Projects and Contests

Annual contests sponsored by the professional organizations within Bourns allow our students to put the skills they have learned in the classroom and lab to use in practical situations. They gain real-world experience and learn to work together as a team on projects.

For example, the UCR Society of Automotive Engineers (UCR SAE) competes in the SAE’s Mini Baja and Formula SAE contest. They design and build the vehicles, then compete against other institutions in a variety of rigorous challenges.

BCOE Honors Program: Recognizing Excellence

The Bourns College Honors Program recognizes high-achieving students who embrace the challenges and rewards of scholarship and research. Students who complete the programs receive recognition on the diploma and academic transcripts. Visit our honors program Web page to learn more.
